Beyond Bangkok Areas: Wanting to go beyond the boundaries of Bangkok to discover a whole new Thailand. Let us venture out and explore a few areas which can be easily covered in a day’s trip. All the areas listed here are famous for one reason or another and serve as a great weekend getaway for the local Thai as well as the international traveller.
Ayutthaya: Situated around 86 kms north of Bangkok, this place was once a Siamese Kingdom. This place also named Ayudhya is a must for a day-trip for anyone interested in knowing the history behind this place. Ayutthaya, in essence is a modern Thai city adorned with archaeological wonders that spell the history of a great civilization. Once a great kingdom it was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. Its name is inspired from a city named Ayodhya in India which is the birth place of Lord Rama. Owing to its rich history this place is revered for its temples and palaces, few of which are also in a dilapidated state now. This once a kingdom and now a city, is located at the confluence of three rivers namely the Chao Phraya River, the Lopburi River and the Pa Sak River. Some of the famous attractions of this place are the Bang Pa-in (en-route to Ayutthaya), the Ayutthaya Historical Park, the Wat Phra Mahathat, the Ayutthaya ruins, Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon, Wat Chaiwattanarm, Phra Mongkon bophit, Wat Na Phra Meru and a whole host of other options. One could also do well to take a trip on a long tail boat in the Chao Phraya River and savour these Grand sights. Alternatively, one could take a elephant ride by joining the camp at ElephantStay or the Royal Elephant palace and can view these sights from atop an elephant.
Hua Hin: Around two and a half hours ride from Bangkok this beachside resort promises to be the perfect weekend get away. Discovered as long back as 1920, this small fishing village was a favoured destination for King Rama VII and the Thailand aristocracy. Since then it has also become famous amongst the rich elite and the Expat community who have built their summer houses here. Because of such a strong historical heritage, this place has been preserved to retain its old world charm. Some of the famous attractions here are the Banyan Golf Club, Black Mountain Golf Club, Black Mountain Water Park, Huay Mongkol Temple, Maruekatayawan Palace, Suan Son Pradipat Beach & the Klai Kang Won Palace. Some good hotels and resorts are Jaidee Resort, Devasom Hua Hin resort & Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas.
Kanchanaburi: Located 150 miles from Bangkok, this place is the best bet for all nature lovers and adventurous souls. One could do well to take a tour on the Kwai River or Go cycling amidst the natural sights. Whatever you do, just make sure to visit the lovely Nam Tok Waterfall & Death War Museum.
Koh Chang: Koh Chang also known as the Elephant Island is fast gaining repute because of a host of lovely sand beaches that it has to offer. This Island has witnessed a huge boom in tourism in the last few years and is becoming an increasingly favoured destination. Amongst the famous attractions here are the Ban Kwan Chang, the Klong Plu Waterfall, the White Sand Beach, the Ban Chang Thai, the Bailan beach, the Khlong Prao beach & the Koh Chang Golfcourse. Located in the Trat province, it takes about five hours to reach here.
Pattaya: Pattaya is a famed seaside resort, located around 150 km southeast of Bangkok. Every year it is known to attract a millions of travellers. The other nearby by beach areas namely Jomtien and Naklua are also fast gaining importance. It is known to have around 21 Golf courses and a few amusement parks as well. Though recently Pattaya is becoming a favoured destination for its nighlife, offering a range of Go Go and beer bars. Some of the famous attractions here are the Khao Kheo Open Zoo, Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical garden, 2Sky Pattaya, Sanctuary of Truth, Anek Kusan Sala, Elephant Village Pattaya, the Tiffany’s show, the famous Floating market & the Venue cabaret. Though famous for its beaches, the Pattaya city also does well with a whole host of attractions for the discerning traveller. Located just two hours drive from Bangkok, Pattaya is the most favoured destination for the Bangkok tourist.
